Treatments for Athletes

and their Injuries
Acute Injuries:
Acute Injuries are sudden, sharp, traumatic injuries which immediately cause pain. Often, acute injuries result from impact or trauma such as a fall, sprain or collision. Common signs and symptoms of acute injury include pain, tenderness, redness, skin's warm to the touch, swelling and inflammation.
Treatment:
The best treatment to use is ice to reduce swelling and pain. Ice, causes the blood vessels to narrow and limits bleeding to the injured area. Ice is helpful when treating acute injuries; to treat overusage, the injured area should be iced after running to reduce and prevent inflammation. It is not helpful to ice a chronic injury before exercising.
Chronic Injures:
Chronic injuries can be subtle and slow to develop. They sometimes come and go and may cause dull pain or soreness. Often, they are caused by overuse and develope when an acute injury is not treated or doesn't heal properly.
Treatment:
Heat is used for chronic injuries or injuries that have no inflammation or swelling. Moist, damp heat therapy is best because it increases circulation and raises skin temperatures. Heat should be applied to sore, stiff, nagging muscles or joint pain. The heat increases the elasticity of joint connective tissues and stimulates blood flow. Athletes with chronic pain or injuries should use heat therapy before exercising. Using the oils of Eucalyptus of Skin Specific together with the heat of the Flax Seed Body Warmers helps to relax tight, spasm muscles, sore, stiff, nagging muscles, and joint pain. Do not apply heat after exercises. After a workout or exercise, ice should be used on a chronic injury.
